A lawyer for a Florida man who was arrested at a golf tournament in a drunken haze while trying to buy cocaine told a judge Friday that his client has the right to remain silent while his case is investigated, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Ronald H. Gonsalves, 65, of West Palm Beach pleaded not guilty to the charges of grand theft of a handgun, possession of cocaine with the intent to deliver and possession of methamphetamine. He was held without bond in the Palm Beach County Jail.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Shackelford agreed to dismiss Holes's second attempt at silence Thursday night in a closed-door hearing, according to the Orlando Sentinel, citing Holes's attorney, Robert Fagard.

The judge declined to place Holes on probation, according to the newspaper.

Gonsalves's lawyer is urging Shackelford to dismiss the case because the allegations in the complaint were false.

Fagard also said that Gonsalves had a "history of serious problems with the law and mental health."

A lawyer for Gonsalves, Jason Kramar, told Shackelford that Gonsalves has a felony drug charge pending from 2012 in Florida, and a drug addiction conviction.

"He is not fit for the office," Kramar said in his opening statement. "He is not fit to represent this court."

Gonsalves allegedly bought up the $1,000 cocaine from the player to try to buy the golf cart that was supposed to help him make his way down the fairway. He drove with the cart to an off-course trailer for storage, and his wife got the cart stolen when she saw him driving it in an intoxicated manner, the suit said.

When police tried to contact him for interviews, Holes allegedly lied about his condition to police, and they searched him at his home and found a loaded 9mm shell casing and a knife, according to the lawsuit.
